The New York Times reportedly illustrated a summit-related article with a Reuters photograph showing a moped rider passing BRICS signage. France 24 and Al Jazeera used similar pictures featuring cyclists near summit posters, while German broadcaster DW selected an image of a man resting beside BRICS branding during hot weather. The China Global South Project also used a Reuters photograph showing a pedestrian walking past a hoarding featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Comparable criticism was directed at images selected by other international publications. Angry Indian users argued that the individual photographs were not necessarily false, but their repeated use created a familiar “ambition versus poverty” contrast. They questioned why reports about high-level diplomacy did not instead feature Bharat Mandapam, official meetings, visiting leaders or modern infrastructure surrounding the event. Some users described the practice as “poverty porn” and compared it with earlier foreign coverage that placed cows, auto-rickshaws or slums alongside stories about India’s space missions, economic growth and technology sector. Others rejected the criticism, noting that bicycles, mopeds and informal workers are legitimate parts of Indian life. They argued that showing ordinary citizens does not automatically insult the country or make a photograph inaccurate. The controversy therefore concerns editorial framing more than factual misinformation. News organisations routinely choose from numerous photographs, and critics say those selections influence how international audiences understand a country. The discussion has renewed calls for more balanced imagery—showing India’s poverty and everyday struggles where relevant, but also representing its infrastructure, technology, urban development and changing economy without repeatedly relying on outdated visual stereotypes.
